Muslim Man Aims To Become First Turkish Congressional Representative In The U.S.

Alp Basaran is a Democratic candidate for New Jersey’s 9th congressional district in the 2020 election.

According to reports, Basaran. born in Turkey, came to the United States when he was four years-old and became an undocumented immigrant after overstaying his visa. Basaran and his mother were sent back to Turkey, while his dad remained in the U.S. Four and a half years later, Basaran received his green card and moved back to the U.S.

Basaran is anti-President Trump, as are many of the muslims running for office. Basaran claims that the idea of the America Dream has been distorted since Donald Trump was elected. Basaran claims that Trump’s policies have exacerbated racism, xenophobia, misogyny and divisions among Americans.

“We’ve entered a dark era in the United States where wealth inequality has reached historic proportions and an entire presidency is dedicated to further entrenching that inequality,” Basaran said.

If elected, Basaran would not only be the first Turkish-American in Congress but the third formerly undocumented American and fifth Muslim.
