Two Somali refugees fight for seat in Congress

Earlier this month, Keith Ellison announced he would not be seeking reelection to Congress in 2018, instead he will run for Minnesota Attorney General.

8 candidates have filed to run for Ellison’s seat, 2 of which are Somali refugees.

Ilhan Omar and Jamal Abdulahi are both seeking election to the U.S. House to represent the 5th Congressional District of Minnesota.

Omar is currently a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, representing District 60B.

Omar and Abdulahi were both born in Somalia and later came to the US as refugees. Their platform is pretty much the same, resist President Trump and his policies. Omar and Abdulahi are both democrats.

The primary election is Aug. 14, 2018.
