Somali Refugee Defeated in Utah Election

Fatima Dirie, a former refugee from Somalia, was defeated in the general election for Utah House of Representatives, District 33 on November 3, 2020.

Dirie was defeated by Republican incumbent Craig Hall by 146 votes. Hall received 5,398 votes, while Dirie received 5,252 votes.

Dirie currently works as Salt Lake City’s Refugee Liaison in the Mayor’s Office. 

She came to the United States in 1997.
