3 muslims re-elected to Congress

3 muslims were re-elected to Congress on November 3, 2020.

Andre Carson was re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Indiana’s 7th Congressional District. He won the election with 61.1% of the votes. Carson has been a member of Congress since 2008. He was the second muslim elected to Congress. Keith Ellison, who is currently Minnesota’s Attorney General, was the first muslim elected to Congress in 2006.

Rashida Tlaib was re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Michigan’s 13th Congressional district. She won the election with 67.1% of the votes.Tlaib was first elected to Congress in November 2018. She was sworn into office on a quran in January 2019.

Ilhan Omar was re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District. She won the election with 64.3% of the votes. Omar was first elected to Congress in November 2018. She was sworn into office on the quran in Janurary 2019.

Tlaib and Omar were the first muslim women elected to Congress.

There were over 20 other muslim candidates who ran for Congress in 2020 and were defeated.

Carson, Tlaib and Omar remain the only 3 muslim members of Congress.
