There are at least four muslim candidates running for Virginia State Senate in the 2019 Election. Each muslim candidate is running in a different district. Read about the candidates below:
Yasmine Taeb is a Democratic candidate for State Senate in Virginia’s 35th District.
Taeb came to the U.S. from Iran, illegally, when she was in the second grade. Taeb says that her and her family made their way to Mexico and climbed through a hole in the fence at the southern border, to sneak into the U.S. Taeb has since became a legal citizen.
Taeb is an attorney who fights for refugees and asylum seekers.
According to Taeb’s website, she was the first Muslim woman and Iranian-American to be elected to the Democratic National Committee.
Taeb is against the travel ban and says that’s what encouraged her to run for office.
Taeb describes herself as a progressive democrat.
Taeb is endorsed by Emgage Action, an organization aimed at getting muslims elected into the U.S. Government, at all levels.
Taeb will face two Democrats in the Primary Election on June 11th 2019. No Republicans filed to run for this seat.
Qasim Rashid is a Democratic candidate for State Senate in Virginia’s 28th District.
Rashid is a muslim man who was born in Pakistan.
According to Rashid’s Facebook page, Tim Kaine is his old law school professor. Not only was Kaine his professor, but they have remained friends.
Rashid is also endorsed by Emgage Action.
Ghazala Hashmi is a candidate for State Senate in Virginia’s 10th District.
Hashmi is a muslim woman who was was born in Pakistan.
According to reports, if elected, Hashmi would be the first muslim woman elected to Virginia State Senate.
Hashmi decided to run for Virginia State Senate after hearing about the travel ban.
Mohammed Sharafat Hussain-Babu is a Democratic candidate for State Senate in Virginia’s 33rd District.
Hussain-Babu is a Bangladeshi muslim man.
Hussain-Babu will face two Democrats in the Primary Election on June 11th 2019. No Republicans filed to run for this seat.
