Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib sent out an email that claims President Trump is unfit to be President and claims that he and his family have committed crimes since taking office. Tlaib goes on to call for President Trump to be impeached.
See email below:
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to question Donald Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen, who testified before the House Oversight committee.
As Mr. Cohen said in his testimony:
“I am ashamed that I chose to take part in concealing Mr. Trump’s illicit acts rather than listening to my own conscience. I am ashamed because I know what Mr. Trump is. He is a racist. He is a conman. He is a cheat.”We should all be ashamed for every day that Congress lets this racist conman hold office.
That’s why I have supported impeachment since I was sworn into this Congress: Because I cannot sit silently while the President makes a mockery of the Constitution.
When I asked if Mr. Cohen thinks the President of the United States is making decisions in the best interest of the American people, he said, “No, I don’t.” I confirmed with Mr. Cohen that for Trump, his brand comes first, not the American people — and that Trump directed Mr. Cohen to commit and cover up multiple felonies.
I am upset — and so are my residents — that Trump is using the most powerful position in the world to hurt our country solely for personal gain. And I’m upset that Members of Congress are afraid to talk about the consequences: impeachment.
As I said during the hearing: Individual-1 (the word used to describe Trump as a co-conspirator in legal documents) is setting a precedent that the highest office can be attained through intentional illegal activity and cover-up, and that the President can hold onto business assets and break campaign finance laws and constitutional clauses.
Many of my colleagues have said repeatedly that we must wait for Robert Mueller’s full report before pursuing our constitutional obligation to impeach the criminal who occupies the White House.
But we already know enough to know that Donald Trump is unfit to be President. And we already know that he and his family have committed crimes since taking office. In just the last month, we’ve seen him violate the Constitution and obstruct justice in plain sight, when he abused his power in calling a fake national emergency and when he threatened Cohen’s family to intimidate Cohen out of telling Congress the truth.
That’s witness tampering, and it’s illegal. Because of such threats, we had to delay the House Oversight Committee hearing.
Republican Members of Congress have also threatened Mr. Cohen. And at the hearing we saw Republicans try all kinds of tricks and antics, including bringing out a Black former employee of Mr. Trump’s to stand silently in the background as evidence that the President isn’t racist — which I joined Congresswomen Lawrence and Pressley in condemning.
It’s time to show political courage and call out injustices. We must hold people accountable, including my colleagues in Congress, Michael Cohen, and Donald Trump.
My colleagues in Congress and I took an oath to defend the Constitution, and enshrined in our country’s founding legal document is an important tool of our democracy: Congress has the power, and the responsibility, to impeach a dangerous president. And we don’t need criminal charges to do it.
We must impeach and remove Donald Trump — or “Individual-1” — from the Presidency. Every day he remains in office is a stain on our nation.
We can’t wait. We must start impeachment proceedings, and hold more investigations as soon as possible. Because the American people deserve the full truth on the extent of Trump’s crimes.
It is absurd to think that we should allow Trump to continue to hold the highest office in the land while we determine whether there are even more crimes that we don’t know about.
